On Friday, December 6th, Craig Regional Park set the stage for an unforgettable day of athletic achievement at the PYLUSD Middle School Cross Country Championships. Over 350 student-athletes (173 girls, 184 boys) from across the district gave it their all, capping a remarkable season that saw a total of 766 runners participate in races, including 409 at the Madrigal Invitational on November 20th.
The Championships brought intense competition and plenty of standout moments, with Yorba Linda, Tuffree, and Kraemer Middle Schools winning the following team events:
The PYLUSD Championship was not only a testament to the hard work and talent of our student-athletes but also a celebration of the power of sports to unite and inspire. The runners, their coaches, and families should be proud of their achievements and the strong sense of community they fostered throughout the season. Congratulations to all the athletes who participated and to the school coaches/PE Teachers and Principals for their teams' stellar performances.
Our special thanks to the leaders who made this event possible: Roy Gill, Sarah Barton, Gina Aguilar, Diane Torres, Allyson Reeds, Coach Jacinto, Coach Jay, and the REACH Foundation Board Members: Claudia & Mark Beckman, and Heather Siemons. To our District Admins, School Board, Principals, Coaches/PE teachers, and school staff—your dedication to these students’ growth and success is truly inspiring.
To our student volunteers, REACH Interns, including the Valencia High School Cross-Country Team, thank you for your support and ensuring today ran smoothly. And of course, to our families, grandparents, aunts and uncles and spectators—thank you for your cheering, cow bells, and encouragement. You’re the heart of what makes events like this so special.”
Six runners delivered standout performances, setting the bar high for the competition:
On Wednesday, November 20th, the tranquil paths of Yorba Regional Park came alive with the energy and determination of young athletes at the first-ever Amy Madrigal Middle School Cross Country Invitational, sponsored by the REACH Foundation. The event brought together students from eight middle schools, including Brea and Rancho Starbuck intermediate, showcasing their talent, teamwork, and school spirit.
Over 420 runners tackled the scenic 2-mile course, cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of families, friends, and educators. The day featured thrilling races in four categories: 8th-grade girls and boys followed by 6th/7th-grade girls and boys. Top honors went to runners whose resilience and speed earned medals for their outstanding placements, with the Top 20 in each race also taking home medals as a testament to their hard work.
The event concluded with an award ceremony celebrating both individual and team achievements. “It’s amazing to see the students’ excitement before the race, their determination as they push themselves, and the connections formed as they cheer for one another,” said Race Director Roy Gill. “This Invitational is a shining example of how athletics bring a community together.”
The success of the event was made possible by the dedication of key contributors. Special thanks go to Sarah Barton, Diane Torres, and Gina Aguilar for their leadership and coordination within PYLUSD. Recognition also goes to Coach Jacinto and the Valencia High School Cross-Country Team, who set-up the course. Allyson Reeds from OCDE, ensured a professionally organized start of each race and Finish Results providing the official timing.
The REACH Foundation’s collaborated with OC Parks, the City of Anaheim and the City of Placentia to host the Cross Country events. With the smiles and success from the event, the Amy Madrigal Invitational promises to become a cherished annual tradition, fostering a love for athletics and school pride for years to come.

Our Acknowledgements & Gratitude for this Awesome team:
"To know her is to truly love her. A perfect blend of positivity, wit, sarcasm, work ethic, and kindness, the sudden loss of Amy Madrigal on May 22, 2023 to a serious stroke is heartbreaking. She is remembered as a favorite teacher, caring coach, hard-working athletic director, unparalleled assistant principal, loving sister, daughter, aunt, and friend. But, her true legacy is the role she valued above all else - devoted mother to Mila and Oliver and step mother to Anthony alongside the love of her life, Rudy."
