Background Story
The concept of the Care Closet was born out of a personal experience in 2020 with a high school freshman who did not have hygiene necessities or detergent, and on a daily basis felt uncomfortable with peers and adults. Over the course of two years and with the assistance of district personnel, a school custodian, the Esperanza principal, and the high school activity director, the first Care Closet opened on the Esperanza High School Campus in October of 2022.
It is a beautifully decorated and inviting space. Students in the engineering class built racks and shelves, the graphic design class created signage, and through the generosity of the community a comfortable chair, full-length mirror, music, and hanging plants were added.
How Does It Work?
Students visit the Care Closet on Wednesdays! No judgment, no questions — just a helping hand and a friendly face.
