Long-time educator and community member Doug Domene became the new Superintendent of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District effective July 2012.
An educator for 35 years, Doug is well-respected and highly visible in the community. Under his leadership the district navigated the State’s tumultuous financial crisis while protecting programs valued by our community and no longer found in many districts, including the visual and performing arts, elementary physical education and programs for at-risk students.
Doug, however, is first an educator. He began his teaching career at Whittier Christian High School before joining the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District 28 years ago. He started as an English teacher/baseball coach at Esperanza High School where he helped lead the school to three CIF baseball championships and was named National Assistant Coach of the Year. He later became dean of activities and assistant principal, a position which he also held at El Dorado High School.
In 2005, Superintendent Dennis Smith appointed him as Director of Executive Services charged with overseeing the district’s strategic planning, accountability and special projects. In this role, he spearheaded the district’s massive $600 million school modernization program which has resulted in new classrooms, technology-rich equipment for teachers, and new support facilities such as athletic fields and gyms as well as a new performing arts center.
